The career of iconic Australian designer Max Robinson was the subject for MADA Volume Control’s October 20th presentation. Supported by colleagues David Lancashire and Brian Sadgrove, Max discussed his creative journey spanning over five decades. A small but enthusiastic audience was taken through many of his key projects and experiences, ranging from Sidney Nolan forgeries to the design of Australia’s $10 note.

The panel discussion was moderated by Dominic Hofstede in his newly appointed role as an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow for MADA.

In July 2014 Dominic Hofstede was appointed to the position of Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University. The role encompasses a broad range of activities related to the documentation of Australian graphic design, specifically from the period 1960—1990.

The unique opportunity to collaborate with MADA arose primarily because of the online archive recollection.com.au, a studio project established in 2009, and also through the efforts of Warren Taylor. We worked with Warren on an exhibition of Les Mason’s Epicurean Magazine at his famed city gallery, The Narrows, before he closed the space in 2010. He continues to facilitate exhibitions and projects under The Narrows moniker, combining this work with teaching and research for MADA.

A redesigned and realigned version of the Re:collection website will be one potential result of the collaboration, along with the possibility for numerous publishing and exhibition outcomes. The intention is also to engage directly with the MADA student community on these projects. Ultimately, our aim is to spark interest in a shamefully neglected aspect of Australian graphic design.

In late 2013, Dominic Hofstede presented the studio’s work at the tantalizingly titled design conference, Sex, Drugs & Helvetica. The lecture was based around a case study format, exploring the process of designing the cookbook Hungry with Guy Mirabella.

It is available to watch on the SD&H website, along with an article Dominic wrote titled ‘Replication or Inspiration’ which explores the tricky subject of managing influence.

Unfold is a periodic journal featuring creative individuals who enter our lives both professionally, and personally. Design is rarely a solitary vocation. Unlike artists who often toil away in isolation producing work for their own motives, we work for, and with, any number of people from a myriad of backgrounds.

We created Unfold to share their stories. The first issue will be published in both printed and digital forms soon. Subscribe to our RSS feed or sign up for our newsletter to keep updated.
