Hofstede

  • In July 2014 Dominic Hofstede was appointed to the position of Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University. The role encompasses a broad range of activities related to the documentation of Australian graphic design, specifically from the period 1960—1990.

The unique opportunity to collaborate with MADA arose primarily because of the online archive recollection.com.au, a studio project established in 2009, and also through the efforts of Warren Taylor. We worked with Warren on an exhibition of Les Mason’s Epicurean Magazine at his famed city gallery, The Narrows, before he closed the space in 2010. He continues to facilitate exhibitions and projects under The Narrows moniker, combining this work with teaching and research for MADA.

A redesigned and realigned version of the Re:collection website will be one potential result of the collaboration, along with the possibility for numerous publishing and exhibition outcomes. The intention is also to engage directly with the MADA student community on these projects. Ultimately, our aim is to spark interest in a shamefully neglected aspect of Australian graphic design.
